Ian Berry had left the prestigious Picture Post to work for Drum, a South African magazine for non-whites. “I was accused of being a Communist, and God knows what,” he says. On several occasions he bailed out his black colleagues for violating the pass laws, then photographed those who had been beaten in custody.
